VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) allows a person to make a phone call by
utilizing an existing internet connection. A normal phone call utilizes an
approach known as circuit switching in order to transfer a phone call. Circuit
switching involves the establishment of a connection between two points over a
dedicated line. This connect must remain open for the duration of the phone
call. VoIP works by using the same approach as the internet; this is known as
packet switching. Packet switching involves the establishment of a connection
that only lasts for a short amount of time and is able to travel along a number
of different paths. The time in which the connection remains open is sufficient
to send and receive ‘packets’ of information. By doing this, VoIP minimizes the
amount of transmission time that a phone call occupies, thus making VoIP a much
more cost-effective option than a standard phone service. The fact that calls
occupy minimal transmission time combined with the number of paths possible for
the signal to travel means that multiple phone calls made with a VoIP system
only use the same amount of space as a single phone call made using a standard
phone line.
Implementing a VoIP system will also enable the user to bypass the need for a
general phone provider, thus this will eliminate any unnecessary costs
associated with normal phone service providers. Many people have opted for the
VoIP system due to the vast amount of money the system allows them to save.
The system is capable of being used anywhere where a suitable broadband
connection can be accessed, thus it is possible for a person to be contacted
anywhere in the world on the same number. This makes the VoIP system and
extremely functional options for business people.
When implementing a VoIP system the user must also have a suitable internet
connection as well as suitable equipment with which to make the call. Equipment
includes analogue telephone adaptors (ATA) to enable a person to use a normal
phone with a VoIP system, IP phones designed especially to connect to a computer
or internet connection, or a computer with the appropriate software in order to
send calls directly from one computer to another.
