Normal phone calls use the process of circuit switching to transfer a phone call form one point to another. This involves the establishment of a connection over a dedicated line which must remain open for the duration of the call.
VoIP utilizes the same process as the internet; packet switching. Packet switching involves the establishment of a connection (possible through a variety of different paths) that only remains open long enough for a set amount of data to be sent and received. Thus, phone calls made using a VoIP system are much more efficient in terms of transmission time used and are significantly more cost effective than their standard counter parts.
VoIP providers are those companies which are able to supply a person with the VoIP service. The services that are supplied will vary from provider to provider.
Providers will supply the standard phone call features free of charge, that normal phone companies charge for, including caller ID, call waiting, return call, call transfer and three way calling.
Some providers will also supply highly advanced call filtering options and the ability to check voicemail or attach VoIP messages to e-mails.
The VoIP supplier will also affect the calls that can be made. Some suppliers will allow any number to be
dialed, whereas other will only allow the user to dial other subscribers to that service.
There are a variety of different VoIP providers; all offering different types of plans. Whilst some providers may offer free phone calls over an internet connection, other providers may plans (such as minute plans or plans offering an unlimited amount of calls for a set amount of money each month).
As the process and services of these VoIP providers will vary, it is a good idea to do some research and compare companies before opting for one provider over another; this will ensure that you select an appropriate VoIP provider capable of meeting your requirements.
