Voice over internet protocol (VoIP) is a new form of phone service that enables
people to make phone calls by utilising an existing internet connection.
Voice over internet protocol utilizes existing internet connections to bypass the need for a normal phone service provider. In doing so VoIP is capable of significantly decreasing the costs of phone calls (particularly national and international calls) and thus is able to save the user a significant amount of money.
By utilizing internet connections, VoIP is able to be used from anywhere around the world, providing there is a suitable broadband connection. All the user is required to do is connect to the internet and calls are able to be forwarded to their location, regardless of where they are in the world.
Whilst VoIP provides all of the general features that a standard phone services provides (including call waiting, call transfers, caller Identification and more) it is also capable of providing new and highly advanced features. Features that are available will vary depending on the VoIP provider being used.
There are three ways in which Voice over internet protocol is able to be accessed; each method requires the appropriate equipment in order to successfully connect to the internet to make calls.
The simplest and most inexpensive way of accessing VoIP is by computer to computer. This method requires appropriate software, a microphone, speakers and a sound card in order to transfer calls from one computer to another. Software is available online and is fairly inexpensive. It can be downloaded and installed on a computer in a matter of minutes. Once these items have been purchased there is no charge for calls aside from the standard service provider charge (If there are any).
Analogue telephone adaptors (ATA) are attachments that are available to convert he analogue signal of a normal phone into a digital signal able to be transferred over the internet, thus this method enables people to use a standard phone to access
Voice over internet protocol.
It is also possible to purchase IP phones in order to access VoIP. Whilst Voice
over internet protocol phones are almost identical to normal phones, they have an Ethernet connection in place of the standard phone connector that is found on normal phones.
