VoIP phone services enable people to make phone calls using a standard broadband
internet connection. VoIP phone services utilize the same methods as the
internet in order to place a call. A connection is established between two
points (there are a number of possible paths that this connection may take)
which remains open long enough for data to be sent and received. This differs
form the process of a normal phone call, in which the established connection is
required to remain open for the entire duration of the phone call.
Access to VoIP is available via a number of methods. It is possible to purchase Analogue telephone adaptors (ATA) in order to convert the analogue signal from a normal phone to a digital signal, in order for the phone to be used for VoIP calls. IP phone designed specifically for VoIP services are also available. These phone can be plugged directly into a router and contain all required hardware and software to access VoIP.
Computer to computer calls are also possible, providing the user has the relevant software, a microphone, speakers and a sound card.
VoIP phone services can eliminate or minimize the need for a normal phone service provider, thus they are capable of saving the user a substantial amount of money by
minimizing cost associated with standard phone service providers.
There are a number of companies that offer VoIP services; these companies are known as VoIP providers. VoIP providers vary in the services that they are able to supply and the fees that they charge. Whilst some will offer their services for free, others will charge, usually by offering a certain payment plan (e.g. pay by the minute).
Services that are offered through VoIP include standard phone services such as call waiting, call transfer, caller identification, return call and three way calling. These standard services are generally offered free of charge.
Other services that may come at a price include the ability to check voice mail or attach VoIP messages to e-mails as well as other advanced call filtering options. Additional services will vary according to supplier, so be sure to compare suppliers before selecting one that will meet your requirements.
